Hello, readers! I hope all of you enjoyed the holiday break and spent some time with family and friends. I also hope you were able to read some good books! I've graciously been granted the green light to continue with the book club at the Utah State Prison. And, after some delays, tonight was our first night! Word has spread and we have a healthy-sized group: 13! We have some familiar faces, but most of them are new to the book club. Our group is very excited.
Our theme for this semester is Reading Around the World. Here is the description:
We live in an increasingly global society. Now more than ever, it's important to strive for understanding of those around us. How can world literature help us with this? What can it do for our understanding of where we've been, where we are, and where we're going? This collection of books transcends national boundaries, taking us to places like Vietnam, Norway, Japan, and the U.S.-Mexico Border. There are stories of international intrigue, familial heartbreak, and surreal oddities. Your passport better be up to date because we are jet setting across the literary world. Join us, won’t you?
Starting a new club, especially with 13 readers, means that we need some books! The Lone Peak Book Club relies solely on donations to help each reader get their own copy of the book. We wouldn't be able to get books in the hands of every reader were it not for people like you.
A few things:
Feel free to share this with people in your social or professional circles.
If you'd like to send a book from a local bookstore, let me know and I can mark the book you purchased as such on our wish list
Feel free to buy used!
Make sure, if possible, you list who bought it so we can send you a thank you card
If you'd like to get involved in other aspects of UPEP, let me know!
Here’s the link to purchase books for this semester (we’ve already fulfilled one of the titles). When checking out, the books should automatically ship to my address. Let me know if you experience any hiccups.
The first book we are reading is Beartown. That discussion take place next week.
Hope you’re reading something good!
